How to adapt to studying in Germany
? Every foreign student has his own bittersweet experience on the way to school. They are under heavy academic pressure, have tasted the hardships of foreign life, swam across the cultural differences between the East and the West, and of course enjoyed a sense of accomplishment beyond themselves. We interviewed several foreign students, some of whom have just gone abroad and some who have successfully studied abroad. Their major directions are different, some study natural science and some study social science. We recorded some fragments of their growth experience, hoping to draw lessons from those students who have not fully adapted to the study and life abroad and are about to go abroad. ? China students who come to Germany have to study at home for 800 hours, so don't feel inferior because of the language barrier. Only by studying hard and communicating boldly can the language get better and better. ? Study hard to overcome language barriers? Language barrier is often the biggest problem that foreign students encounter when they first go abroad, especially for those who have not laid a good language foundation at home. Language barriers will not only affect professional learning, but also affect whether students can quickly integrate into the local society. Qin Shihuang, who is now studying in the first year of enterprise economics in technical university of munich, Germany, has a deep understanding of this. Because she only studied German for 200 hours in China, she didn't officially start learning German until she came to Germany. At first, she didn't know anything about language classes. Qin Shihuang said that it was difficult to communicate with teachers and classmates after coming to Germany, so she had to study hard and spend twice as much time and energy as others to catch up. She suggested that China students who come to Germany should study at home for 800 hours, and don't feel inferior because of the language barrier. Only by studying hard and communicating boldly can the language get better and better. ? Li Jialin arrived in France in September 2007, and now he is a second-year graduate student in the School of Literature and Culture of the University of Lyon, France. He also has his own feelings about overcoming the language barrier. He majored in French in China, and he came out of a training class. But communicating with the French is not the same as communicating with teachers and classmates who study French at home. When I first came, I still encountered some difficulties. He said: "French people are famous for their love of French. Some people don't even want to speak English. Therefore, having a simple French foundation is one of the keys to traveling to France. If you don't know French in France, you are likely to get a cold shoulder. " One of his friends can't stay in his apartment because of his poor French. The reason is simple: the landlord doesn't like to communicate with people who don't know French. Li Jialin said that if a foreigner can speak some French, the communication process will be very pleasant and smooth, which will become a golden key to integrate into French society. ? Don't be intimidated by failing to keep up once or twice. In fact, China students have their own unique perspectives. As long as they play this feature, it is easy for them to stand out. ? Positive attitude to adapt to professional differences? In addition to language barriers, the study pressure of international students also comes from majors. Because the teaching situation of some majors in China is different from that of foreign countries, this difference is especially reflected in some social science majors, which makes some foreign students unable to adapt. ? Dong Kun holds a master's degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of Southern California, and is now a first-year doctoral student in communication at the University of Southern California. "When I resolutely chose to give up my postgraduate study in English editing in Tsinghua and go to the UK to start my life at the London School of Economics and Political Science, I knew what it meant: the relaxed and superior life came to an abrupt end." -This is an introduction by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to her diary of studying abroad. During her first year in Britain, she experienced the bitterness and challenges of going abroad for the first time, but she felt that the biggest difficulty was the difference between domestic and foreign news communication research. Communication at the London School of Economics and Political Science originally belonged to the Sociology Department. At the beginning, I asked the students to comment on the classic communication theory. "But for me who studied journalism at home as an undergraduate, I am not familiar with these theories. What can I comment on? " Therefore, when Dong Kun just went, he had to start studying many professional things again, including endless books and papers. "Obscure theories flooded in, and the library soon became my real dormitory. At first, my plan to travel around Europe with great interest could only be postponed. " However, after several months of insisting on seeing more and learning more, she can completely integrate into the learning environment. Dong Kun came to the United States to study as a postdoctoral fellow. Although his studies will not be so arduous, he is also facing some new situations in his major. For example, many courses in American communication are directly linked to work. "I think the domestic news communication is not in line with the United States, so the students who just came to the United States are somewhat uncomfortable," she said. "But don't be intimidated by not being able to keep up once or twice. In fact, China students have their own unique perspectives. As long as they play this feature, they can easily stand out. " Looking back on her own learning experience, Dong Qu admits that she sometimes hesitates, but she believes that only in such an environment that gives you great pressure at this moment will you find that your potential is infinite. In her view, it is more valuable to cultivate a mentality of facing difficulties than to learn knowledge. ? As they explore slowly, their cooking skills have improved greatly, and they often organize other China students in the community to eat jiaozi together. Now, recalling their initial life, Rebecca said that students had better learn to cook some basic meals before going abroad. ? Solve the problem of "eating" by yourself? In addition to the study pressure, another dilemma faced by international students is the difference in lifestyle, especially eating habits. When many students are in China, they are used to eating in the school cafeteria instead of going to the kitchen at home, and they can't cook at all. However, after going abroad, I found that the level of food consumption abroad is generally high, and I can't get used to foreign food. ? Qin Shihuang had never been in the kitchen before going abroad, so she knew nothing about cooking. There is a joke in Germany: she washed the rice cooker with steel balls and the coating was washed off. Later, she learned that it should be softened with water before washing. At first, like many students in China, she could only cook some simple dishes, such as scrambled eggs, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, tomato and egg soup and so on. Fortunately, some websites for international students in China posted simple Chinese food recipes on food pages, and Qin Shihuang slowly learned to make these recipes. "It's no problem to feed yourself now," she said with a smile. Rebecca, a foreign student, graduated from Jilin University with a major in computer application technology, and came to a research laboratory of the University of Georgia in the United States for project cooperation from June 5 to 10, 2007. He is not used to western food on campus, so he has to cook by himself. At first, neither my roommate nor he knew how to pour oil into the pot. After the oil is hot, put it into the washed dish, add seasonings such as soy sauce and salt, add appropriate amount of water, and cover the pot until it is cooked. It is also called "stew and stir-fry". An international student from Shandong wants to show his cooking skills for spaghetti. As a result, the steamed bread almost didn't knock out their front teeth. It turned out that he just watched his parents do it at home, and he was also a "big girl in a sedan chair." Of course, as they explore slowly, their cooking skills have improved greatly, and they often organize other China students in the club to eat jiaozi together. Now, recalling their initial life, Rebecca said that students had better learn to cook some basic meals before going abroad. ? Influenced by oriental culture, China students are introverted and don't like to show themselves in public, which requires them to take part in social practice and improve their communication skills after going abroad. ? ? ? Open mind to break through cultural differences? Compared with life problems such as food, clothing, housing and transportation, foreign students are faced with deeper differences, which are the differences between eastern and western cultures and ways of thinking. Influenced by oriental culture, China students are introverted and don't like to show themselves in public, which requires them to take part in social practice and improve their communication skills after going abroad. Dong Zhaoyang, who graduated from the Department of Electronic Engineering at the University of Southern California, is deeply touched by this. In September, 2006, she went to America, and found that both westerners and orientals can only appreciate the essence if they quickly integrate into the American cultural atmosphere that is indispensable to each other in the competition. ? The cultural differences between the East and the West are also reflected in the way of behavior. Li Jialin told me that France attaches great importance to etiquette, and thanks and apologies are always on the lips, but on the other hand, the French are willing to express their feelings in a very direct way, rather than tactfully, which is quite different from the habit of China "still hiding half her face from us behind her guitar". This requires China students to experience, adapt and live in harmony with them. ? However, after gradually adapting to cultural differences, some unique advantages of China students can be highlighted. Dong Kun's experience of studying abroad is undoubtedly very smooth to outsiders. She believes that no matter what kind of environment, we should try bravely with an open mind. Once, she took a class of a very famous sociology professor. Many people say that a leader like him doesn't write letters of recommendation to students, and students are afraid to approach him. But Dong Kun thought he should give it a try, so he took the initiative to chat with him. Results Before Dong Kun proposed it, the professor took the initiative to ask her about her future development plan. Later, they made a "gentleman's agreement", and if Dong Kun's paper was well written, the professor would help her write a recommendation letter. "Two weeks later, I showed him the first nine pages I had finished, and he said with satisfaction, don't wait, you can write now." ? I hope this article will be helpful to students studying abroad.
