The school was founded in 1958, relying on the economics major of Nankai University. Formerly known as Hebei Institute of Finance and Economics, in June 1969, it was placed under the leadership of Tianjin and renamed Tianjin Institute of Finance and Economics. On May 7, 2004, it was renamed Tianjin University of Finance and Economics with the approval of the Ministry of Education.

As of March 20021year, the school covers an area of nearly 1400 mu, with a total construction area of about 540,000 square meters.

At present, there are 14 teaching units, 49 undergraduate majors, 3 post-doctoral research stations, 3 first-class discipline doctoral degree authorization points, covering 2 1 two disciplines, 2 two disciplines doctoral programs, 9 first-class discipline master degree authorization points, covering 46 two disciplines, and 13 professional master degree authorization points.

There are 742 full-time teachers, with more than 0.58 million students/kloc-0, including more than 0.2 million undergraduates/kloc-0 and nearly 3,000 graduate students.
