This is a historical issue. China Jiaotong University includes Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi Jiaotong University, Southwest Jiaotong University and Beijing Jiaotong University. The predecessor of Hsinchu Jiaotong University is the same university, namely Nanyang College, which was born in 1896. Beiyang University (now Tianjin University), which was founded with Sheng Xuanhuai, was the earliest university founded by Chinese in modern history of China, and was later called Nanyang University. During the period of Kuomintang rule, Southwest Jiaotong University and Beijing Jiaotong University were set up separately. Several predecessors of Hsinchu Jiaotong University, such as Tangshan Road and Mine School (predecessor of Southwest Jiaotong University) and Beiping Post and Telecommunications School (predecessor of Beijing Jiaotong University), have all developed into national chiao tung university with complete disciplines. After 1952 and 1956 national colleges and universities were adjusted twice, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Xi Jiaotong University were established in 1959 respectively.

The newly established Jiaotong University has nothing to do with transportation, but it means that the disciplines are comprehensively classified and extend in all directions, but now it is mainly science and engineering.
