Biological science major:

Biological science is a discipline that studies the structure, function and law of life activities of organisms, and it is a first-class discipline of life science, covering more than ten two disciplines disciplines such as zoology, botany, biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology, cell biology and genetics. This major pays special attention to the study of basic theory, the training of experimental skills, strengthens professional quality education and cultivates innovative ability, so that students can master solid basic theory and experimental skills after four years of study, with wide knowledge and strong practical ability.

This major mainly trains high-level biological research and teaching talents. Some students are recommended to study for a master's degree without examination after graduation, and some can engage in teaching, scientific research, management and scientific and technological development in institutions and departments such as colleges and universities, scientific research departments, medicine and health, customs, inspection and quarantine, food, environmental protection, gardens, bioengineering, government agencies and so on.

Biotechnology major:

Biotechnology specialty is established on the basis of the original biochemistry specialty and microbiology specialty in our school. In June 2002, the Department of Biochemistry was approved by the Ministry of Education and the State Planning Commission to establish a "National Training Base for Talents in Life Sciences and Technology", and the biotechnology specialty was also awarded as a famous brand specialty in Guangdong Province in 2004.

In the direction of talent training, students pay equal attention to basic theory and applied research, and students can choose related subjects according to their own interests. In the basic theory education, we focus on the frontier disciplines of modern life sciences, with special emphasis on mastering the knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, genomics, protein genomics and its experimental techniques. Relying on the strong scientific research strength of the College of Life Sciences, students are encouraged to carry out scientific research activities in relevant laboratories as soon as possible and accumulate scientific research experience, so as to lay a solid foundation for further study and research in important fields of life sciences at home and abroad. In applied research, combined with the characteristics of South China, we will focus on developing pharmaceutical biotechnology, microbial engineering, marine biological resources development and industrial and agricultural biotechnology.

This major pays special attention to the cultivation of students' innovative ability and comprehensive quality. In addition to extensive and solid professional knowledge, students are also required to have a good foreign language and computer foundation to meet the needs of scientific research and China's economic construction and development.

A considerable number of students can enter graduate schools at home and abroad to pursue master's/doctoral degree courses after graduation, and also engage in scientific research, teaching and production management in institutions of higher learning, scientific research units, medical and health, bioengineering, food and chemical industry, environmental protection and related enterprises and government departments.
