At present, Southwest Petroleum University has developed from a single petroleum engineering college into a multi-level and multi-disciplinary engineering college with the characteristics and advantages of the main disciplines in the field of oil and gas exploration and development, based on the supporting disciplines of oil and gas exploration and development, serving petroleum, facing social and economic construction, focusing on engineering, and infiltrating science, engineering, management and literature. With the development of the school and the adjustment of the direction of running a school, resources and environment make corresponding adjustments and development plans in the discipline construction and development direction. Its overall development idea and goal are: focusing on geological resources and geological engineering and related disciplines, giving priority to development and construction, featuring the combination of science and engineering, and finally creating the national key discipline of "geological resources and geological engineering".

Since 1996, our college has undertaken 10 educational reform projects at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, of which 2 have been completed at the national level and 5 at the provincial and ministerial levels, and now we are studying 1 at the national level and 2 at the provincial and ministerial levels. Publicly publish 13 textbooks (one of which is 2 1 century textbook), record 7 audio-visual films and make 4 CAI courseware.
