With the improvement of voltage level and the increase of installed capacity of power equipment, the requirements for its operational reliability are getting higher and higher. In the research of detection and diagnosis technology of power equipment, the laboratory focuses on the research of insulation aging law and mechanism, on-line monitoring and insulation diagnosis technology of large power equipment, and establishes a multi-factor aging test system of electrical, thermal and mechanical stress. The insulation aging state of power equipment is comprehensively evaluated by using a variety of partial discharge detection technologies in different frequency bands, acoustic and ultrasonic detection technologies and new physical and chemical analysis technologies, and on this basis, a new multifunctional online monitoring system and insulation diagnosis technology are developed, which is supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the State Power Company.

The country is very concerned about the development of UHV transmission technology, and the State Power Company has started the project of building 750 kV transmission project in northwest China. In cooperation with domestic scientific research institutions, the laboratory has carried out research work on insulation characteristics of UHV power equipment, characteristics of UHV transmission system and electromagnetic effects of UHV, and is currently conducting basic research on key technologies of 750kV transmission project.
