The school was founded in June, 1972, formerly known as Hubei Institute of Chemical Technology and Petroleum, under the Hubei Provincial People's Government. 1980 was renamed Wuhan institute of chemical technology in March, and was replaced by the former director of the chemical industry department. 1July, 1998, the school was placed under the management of Hubei Provincial People's Government, and was jointly funded by the central and local governments. In February 2006, it was renamed Wuhan University of Technology. Wuhan Institute of Technology is a key construction university in Hubei Province and a first-class discipline construction university in Hubei Province.
