Hainan University, located in Haikou City, Hainan Province, is a university supported by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Hainan Province, a university jointly established by the People's Government of Hainan Province and the Ministry of Finance, a comprehensive key university in Hainan Province and a first-class university in China Province. Ranked among the national "Double First Class" and "2 1 1 Project", and was selected as the second batch of demonstration bases for studying in China by the Ministry of Education.

The school motto is:

"When rivers enter the sea, it's a long way to go.". The school's predecessor was the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture founded by 1958 and the former Hainan University founded by 1983. In August 2007, the two universities merged into the new Hainan University. 20 17 was selected as the national "world-class discipline" construction university.
