Shanghai Normal University, referred to as Shanghai Normal University for short, was founded by the people of China, the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. It was selected as a comprehensive university with the coordinated development of arts, science and engineering, and the characteristics of normal education.

Shanghai Normal University was founded in 1954 as Shanghai Normal University, expanded to Shanghai First Normal University and Shanghai Second Normal University in 1956, and merged into Shanghai Normal University in 1958. From 1972 to 1978, it merged with five schools including East China Normal University to form Shanghai Normal University. 1978 Restore Shanghai Normal University.

1984 was renamed as Shanghai Normal University. 1994 10, merged with Shanghai Polytechnic Normal University to form a new Shanghai Normal University. 1From September, 1997 to August, 2003, Shanghai Normal University, Huangling Health Teachers College of Lin Nan Normal University, Shanghai Xingzhi Art Teachers College and Shanghai Tourism College were merged or put under the management of the school.
