Shanghai University of Science and Technology was founded in 1958. It used to be China University of Science and Technology Shanghai Branch. Officially named in 1959. Guo Moruo, president of China Academy of Sciences, inscribed the name of the school. Zhou Ren, former academician of Academia Sinica, academician of China Academy of Sciences and vice president of Shanghai Branch of China Academy of Sciences, was appointed as the first president. The school is funded by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, and all research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai help to establish various departments. The principle of running a school is "running a school in the whole hospital and combining departments", and the goal of running a school is "to cultivate outstanding senior scientific research and engineering talents with harmonious development of morality, intelligence and physique for scientific research institutions and new technology bases in China and Shanghai". University of Science and Technology Shanghai is a multidisciplinary university jointly established by China Academy of Sciences and Shanghai, and has long been sponsored by Shanghai Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The heads of all departments of the school are also the directors of Shanghai Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is closely related to research institutes and research institutes.
