1. What is a communication window?
In our life and work, we can't do without dealing with people. Communicating with people is the most common social behavior, especially at work. Communication with colleagues, leaders and employees is the most important content in daily life. Many interpersonal problems are caused by communication problems.
Communication window is a tool to describe and solve communication problems. According to their understanding of the content, information can be divided into four quadrants, namely, public quadrant, privacy quadrant, blind spot quadrant and potential quadrant.
What we know and what others know belong to the common quadrant. Celebrities and leaders we are familiar with all belong to people with large public quadrants. For each of us, parents are the largest people in the public quadrant with us, followed by brothers and sisters, children, relatives and friends, colleagues and so on. With the ranking of public quadrant size, the degree of gaining our trust and recognition is gradually decreasing. Strangers have the smallest public quadrant for us, and our trust in strangers is also decreasing.
What we know but others don't know forms a privacy quadrant. Each of us can think about it, write down three items in our privacy quadrant and send them to the company team. It is estimated that many people can't write it because it is personal privacy. At this time, everyone thinks of the bottom of the privacy quadrant. The proper name is DDS (deep secret), which should be hidden in their deepest and darkest secrets and never revealed. In fact, besides dds, there are two levels of content. One is called "embarrassed to say". I don't like my colleagues at work. I'm afraid to refute him in person and I'm too embarrassed to tell him, so there is always a problem in cooperating with him. The boss has some practices that employees are very resistant to, but they are embarrassed to tell the boss, and then they always make everyone very resistant. How can such a team do a good job? On the other hand, I forgot to say that this is the most prone to problems at work. The boss explained the task to the employee and thought it was clear, but the employee didn't understand it at all, and then he was embarrassed to ask. It is strange that employees can do things according to their own understanding and make the results that the boss needs. This is also called the curse of knowledge. What I already understand always feels simple, thinking that I can fully understand it by sending messages to others, but it is not the case at all.
Is there anything you don't know that others know? This is the personal blind spot quadrant. Let's have a try. Can you write something about your own blind spot quadrant? You can't write it, can you I can't write it because I don't know.

Second, the case of communication window
Once before, our company organized a league construction, and I told my colleagues in charge of the organization that we were going to organize a league construction, and what the budget was, so they could arrange it. As a result, all the hotels we visited were beautiful, but the budget was obviously insufficient. They found some hotel publicity materials and articles from tourists and sent them to me, hoping that seeing such beautiful scenery would make the company raise its budget. At that time, I listened to the communication window mentioned by teacher Fan Deng in Replicable Leadership. What is the core goal of league building? What's the point? What is the reason for the budget, and so on. I know it very well, but my colleagues in the organization really don't know it, so I will communicate with them again what I think, and learn the method of repeating it five times as teacher Fan Deng said, so that the organizers can fully understand what my expectations are for the league building. The activities planned after this communication are similar to what I expected.
Third, how to use the communication window
With the growth of age and our ability and knowledge, the potential quadrant will become smaller and smaller, and the open quadrant will become larger and larger. The process of human growth is actually the process of expanding the open quadrant. By expanding the open quadrant in the team organization, you can gain the respect and trust of other members and improve your leadership ability. So how to enlarge the open quadrant?
You can cut a piece from the privacy quadrant and make what you are embarrassed to say and forget to say as public as possible. You can enlarge the public quadrant by self-disclosure such as public speaking and writing books. For example, if we spend money to attend the courses of Chaos University, we can not only attend classes through APP, but also often come to offline activities organized by Chaos, show our faces more, let more students know you, expand our public quadrant in Chaos University, and earn back more than 1,000 tuition fees this year as soon as possible.
We can also cut a paragraph from the blind spot quadrant and put it in the open quadrant. We don't know the content of the blind spot quadrant, so how can we let ourselves know? When communicating with others, if we find something that we may not know, don't rush to distinguish and explain it, but think calmly. Is it possible that this is my blind spot quadrant? At the same time, we seek feedback from each other to obtain our blind spot content.
Fourth, matters needing attention
Through the study and understanding of the communication window theory, we know that in the process of communication between people, we should pay attention to the knowledge curse of the privacy quadrant, also pay attention to our own unknown blind spot quadrant, talk more and understand more, but we also need to pay attention to the rules of omniscient, outspoken and secretive in the communication process. Don't say whatever you want, or you can know what to say and what not to say by looking at the scene and environment at that time. This is the most important wisdom. ?
