Its predecessor was Taihang Industrial School, Taiyuan Institute of Machinery and North China University of Science and Technology, and it was renamed north university of china in June 2004.

North university of china is a university founded by the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Shanxi Provincial People's Government. Because the school is located in Shanglan Village, which is relatively remote, it covers an area of 2,995 mu. At present, the school has 85 undergraduate majors, 6 postdoctoral mobile stations, 7 first-class doctoral programs and 5 professional master degree programs. Now north university of china has developed from the original ordnance school into a comprehensive university.
