Anhui Normal University is located in Wuhu City, Anhui Province. It is a university jointly established by the Anhui Provincial People's Government, the people of China and the Ministry of Education, and is a national "Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in the Midwest".

The first batch of "High-level University Construction Project with Local Characteristics" and "High-level University Award Fund Project" in Anhui Province's Higher Education Revitalization Plan supported universities, and Anhui Province's peak discipline construction plan focused on supporting universities, and was selected into the "Excellent Teacher Training Plan" of the Ministry of Education, the national backbone teacher training base of primary and secondary schools of the Ministry of Education, and the first batch of social work professional training bases of the Ministry of Civil Affairs;

National Chinese Education Base, Anhui Chinese International Promotion Center, the first batch of master's degree awarding units in China, the first batch of universities with the qualification of accepting overseas students at public expense, the right of associate professors to take self-study exams and the qualification of recommending graduate students without taking exams, and it is also a comprehensive provincial-level key university under key construction in Anhui Province.

The school is in the same strain as the National Anhui University in the Republic of China, and it is the first comprehensive university in the history of higher education in Anhui Province. Its predecessor was the provincial Anhui University, which was founded in Anqing, 1928. 1946 was renamed as National Anhui University, and 1949 moved to Wuhu. After that, it went through several stages of running schools, such as Anhui Normal University, Hefei Normal University, Southern Anhui University and Anhui University of Workers and Peasants.

1972, approved by the State Council, was officially named Anhui Normal University.
