What is the main study content of college astronomy?
Take the astronomy major of Peking University as an example. Compulsory courses include introduction to the universe, introduction to astrophysics, basic physical cosmology, astrophysical observation techniques and methods, astronomical image processing, theoretical astrophysics and astrospectroscopy.

Astronomy department has two training directions: astrophysics and astronomical high technology and its application. The training goal of astrophysics is to enable students to master a broad and solid foundation of mathematical physics and rich knowledge of astronomy, and to receive strict professional skills training in computer and foreign languages, so as to have the initial ability to engage in astrophysics research.

Students majoring in astronomical high-tech and its application should not only achieve the above training objectives, but also master the relevant knowledge of astronomical new technology and its application. Because of the advance of astronomical new technology in the corresponding field, graduates in this field can engage in the development and application of high technology or the management of large-scale engineering projects, which can meet the needs of many aspects of work.

In recent years, about 90% of the graduates of astronomy department have been directly admitted as graduate students by famous universities and astronomical research institutions at home and abroad.

History of Peking University Astronomy Department:

Peking University Astronomy Department was formally established in 2000, and its predecessor was Astronomy Department of Peking University Geophysics Department. Over the past 40 years, the astronomy discipline in Peking University has trained hundreds of outstanding graduates for the country, including three academicians of China Academy of Sciences, and four successively served as the director and deputy director of the Observatory.

A considerable number of graduates have become important academic backbones in the field of astronomy at home and abroad and made important contributions to the development of astronomy in China.

Peking University Astronomy Department was jointly established by Peking University and China Academy of Sciences with the strong support of both sides. Running a school jointly with Beijing Astrophysics Center constitutes an organic whole, giving full play to their respective advantages, further strengthening the teaching staff, improving the conditions for running a school, and promoting the close cooperation between the two sides in personnel training and scientific research.

The Department of Astronomy in Peking University has undergraduate and master's degree programs in astronomy, doctoral degree programs and postdoctoral mobile stations. There are 7 professors (including 2 academicians, Changjiang distinguished professor 1 person, 7 doctoral supervisors) and 4 associate professors.

Astronomy teachers have made many important research achievements in the fields of galaxies and cosmology, high energy astrophysics, radio astrophysics, molecular astronomy, gas nebula physics and stellar physics, and some of them have reached the international advanced level. Astronomy teachers have established close cooperative relations with astronomers from the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Australia, Canada, Russia and other countries.
