A Brief History of Humanities Philharmonic Choir 2004-2009

Qijian

order

A brief history of the development of the Humanities Philharmonic Choir before 2004 was described in my article five years ago. Since 2004, many things have happened in the choir, and it is necessary to review and reflect again after a period of time. Compared with before 2004, the main task of the choir is to straighten out the personnel organization. After 2004, the choir paid full attention to the art of chorus, and various external institutional changes around the choir were replaced by some small internal changes, which made it more difficult to accurately and completely describe what happened during this period.

First, into the real "chorus art" (2004.9-2005.338+02)

Due to the branch of the School of Humanities, the Humanities Philharmonic Choir has become a school-level choir club. Although this change has brought great challenges to the survival and development of the choir, it has also given students greater rights in community organizations. In the spring of 2004, several high-level choirs affiliated to Hubei Chorus Association performed in Meiyuan playground of Wuhan University, which made Wen Aiyue really get in touch with the highest chorus level in Hubei Province and realized the gap of their own level. The choir took this opportunity to join the provincial chorus association, which laid a good foundation for the improvement of the level in the future. After the special performance of "Jin Yun Sleeps peacefully" on May 22nd, the choir made up its mind that all the music recorded by the staff should be rehearsed in the future, and the roll call should be adopted. On the one hand, it can train members' awareness of intonation, and at the same time, it also expands the selection range of tracks (especially the first-class tracks from abroad). In the summer of 2004, the choir held its first summer training camp. In less than a week, the members trained in pronunciation, breathing, reading music and so on, and also tried to arrange works such as Habana Linda, which received good results.

In the spring of 2004, the choir conducted a recruitment, but the recruitment was irregular in terms of organization and scale. In September, 2004, the choir officially enrolled the freshmen of 2004 for the whole school. Freshmen can either sign up on-site through leaflets at the entrance of the canteen, or through the recommendation of existing choir members, and then gather for an interview at a fixed place. The interview is divided into self-introduction, model singing, audition and song selection. The difficulty of the test questions also changes with the ability of freshmen, so that less than 5% students are admitted. The accepted students soon became the main force of the choir, and the choir also carried out various assessments and PK activities irregularly in the future rehearsal to ensure the training level of each choir.

In the second half of 2004, the choir did not perform any performances, but focused on the internal construction of the team. In 2005, the choir represented Wuhan University in the National College Art Festival and won the first prize in Hubei Province. In May, a special performance of modern music was staged in the lecture hall of the Academy of Biological Sciences, which was well received by chorus lovers in the whole school.

After a year of training and exploration, the members of the choir finally realized the difference between chorus art and singing, a mass activity. What we usually call "chorus" generally refers to the singing with a large number of participants, which can mobilize the mood of the masses. Its purpose is more to express feelings and cultivate sentiment. On the other hand, chorus art needs more than just singing. In addition to accurately handling intonation, rhythm, breathing, articulation and vocalization, it is also necessary to understand the creative intention of the songwriter and the artistic conception of the song, which is much higher than singing. As a university choir, it should have a higher artistic pursuit, so how to improve its own level in the next training has become the main task of choir development.

Although the choir has defined the development direction of chorus art songs, what works should be rehearsed is still a big problem. The publicly published chorus score set in China still can't meet the standard of real chorus art songs, so we need to find another way to get a suitable score. At this time, the benefits brought by joining the provincial chorus association are gradually highlighted. Through the platform of Chorus Association, Humanities Philharmonic gradually got in touch with Professor Tian from the Conservatory of Music of Central China Normal University and the Sky Choir under his command. At this time, the Sky Choir has become a minor celebrity in the domestic chorus. They provided a lot of high-level music scores to the Humanities Philharmonic, and they also helped the Humanities Philharmonic a lot in specific rehearsals. By observing the exchange performances of Sky Choir with Harding University, Augustana University Choir and Dresden cappella, the members of the Humanities Philharmonic appreciate the superb strength of foreign high-level choirs, which greatly encourages the members to improve their own level and strength.

II. Participation in world choir games (2005. 12-2006.7)

Participating in the world chorus competition is of course the goal that the Humanities Philharmonic has been expecting. As Sky Choir participated in the 3rd World Chorus Olympic Games (now renamed as "World Chorus Games") held in Bremen in 2004, and the 4th competition was held in Xiamen, which could greatly save the registration fee, the choir decided to prepare for the competition. But after making up your mind, everyone found it difficult. The level of the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra is still a long way from the Sky Choir, and it has never participated in an international competition. It knows nothing about the international mainstream chorus repertoire and chorus style. If the article is irrelevant, it will only draw water with a sieve, and even dampen the enthusiasm of members. However, this concern was quickly resolved by the enthusiasm of the members. Originally, the spirit of the Olympic Games is to focus on participation, so participating in the competition itself is an opportunity for promotion, and winning the prize is not the most important issue. After the choir reached such a consensus, it began a busy and long year of preparation.

Generally speaking, the preparation before the game is rather chaotic. Combined with its own characteristics, the choir chose two groups: the black soul song and the mixing room, which are difficult and competitive. It was not until the last three months before the registration deadline that the choir collected all the music scores, and the rehearsal of many tracks was far behind schedule. Many members are worried about the progress of the rehearsal. Fortunately, the preliminaries of the choir won the full support of Wuhan predecessors and the national music industry. Tian teacher made many suggestions on humanistic music and rehearsal. The chairman of the provincial chorus association, the teacher and his wife Lin personally participated in the rehearsal many times. Rebecca, a professor at Shanghai Conservatory of Music, also gave great guidance to the choir in the final training and gave great confidence to the members before the competition. Members also sacrificed a lot of rest time in rehearsal. The summer training in May Day and the first half of July, although hard, also made the players feel happy from the improvement of their level.

Competition funding is another issue that needs to be considered. Although the world series can save a lot of money in China, the registration fee is only 5,000 yuan, which makes it difficult for the choir to look forward to it. As students organize themselves, the League Affairs Group is not clear about the amount of room and board that members are willing to bear, so it dare not estimate the overall funding gap. At this time, it coincided with the publication of the memoir Confessions of a University President by the old president of Liu Daoyu. On the back cover of this book, the contact information of Liu Daoyu Foundation was left, and the group affairs team got in touch with the Foundation. On the other hand, after many times of communication with the students of the Humanities Philharmonic Group Affairs Section and on-the-spot investigation of the rehearsal of the Humanities Philharmonic, the Foundation was very positive about the development of the choir and decided to sponsor the choir with a registration fee of 5,000 yuan. Later, the choir received personal sponsorship from some members, and members of the choir also said that they could afford to go to Xiamen for accommodation and food. During the competition in Xiamen, they got the support of Xiamen Alumni Association of Wuhan University, and the problem of shortage of funds was basically solved.

From 2005 to 2006, the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra held two official performances. The first time was +0 1 at the end of June, 2005. The concert also undertook the recording task of Xiamen preliminary competition, and the second was the exchange performance with Hubei Opera and Dance Theatre Philharmonic Choir on June 0, 2006. Of course, this concert is also a performance before going to Xiamen. It is worth mentioning that the exchange performance with the Provincial Song Philharmonic Orchestra also set a precedent for two or more choirs to communicate with each other later. In the end, the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra won the gold medal in the mixed-sound indoor rematch and the silver prize in the Xiamen Black Soul Song rematch, which should be said to have greatly exceeded everyone's expectations.

Three. Extensive communication and study (2006.9-2009.438+02)

The award of the World Choir Games proves that the choir has certain strength externally, but the real level of the choir must be improved through repeated performance practice. After returning from Xiamen, the choir conducted extensive exchanges and studies. Hubei Library Choir, hosted by A Shen, a famous anchor of the music station, is the first concert of the Humanities Philharmonic after the return of Xiamen University. The recording of the program was also broadcast at Ashin Philharmonic that night. Using the platform of the Provincial Chorus Association, the Humanities Philharmonic has also learned a lot. At the end of 2006, the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra participated in the student chorus exchange concert sponsored by Hubei Chorus Association in the Chime Concert Hall of Wuhan Conservatory of Music. Since 2007, Mr. and his wife Mr. Lin, President of the Provincial Chorus Association, have personally guided the Humanities Philharmonic for many times. Through Mr. Wang's rehearsal and Mr. Lin's voice training, the members have reached a high level in understanding music scores, controlling pitch and rhythm, improving voice and emotion. Professor Zhu Buxi from Wuhan Conservatory of Music and Professor Rebecca from Shanghai Conservatory of Music also gave great help to the Humanities Philharmonic. The two professors have been to the rehearsal site of the choir for many times to guide the rehearsal, and the choir has the honor to cooperate with Professor Zhu Buxi in the special concert conducted by Professor Zhu Buxi.

In addition to seriously learning from the predecessors in the chorus music industry, the Humanities Philharmonic has also conducted extensive exchanges with other choirs. Wuhan University Evergreen Choir is an old choir composed of retired teachers from Wuhan University. They have a special liking for the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra composed of Wuhan University students. In addition to having a very in-depth exchange with humanities, it has also provided a rehearsal venue for the activity center of veteran cadres for humanities many times. The Provincial Song Philharmonic Choir is a choir under the personal command of teachers and Lin, and humanities have also had exchanges and performances with them. Huangshi Philharmonic Orchestra is another active choir of the Provincial Writers Association. Humanities once performed with them in the provincial song and dance theater. In 2008, the "May 1" humanities also went to Tieshan District of Huangshi City to communicate with Huangshi Philharmonic Orchestra. In March 2008, the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra received the Hong Kong Ensemble Art Troupe, which visited Wuhan, and exchanged and performed with it. One year later, in July 2009, the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra returned to Hong Kong and performed with the Hong Kong Ensemble Art Troupe at the Hong Kong City Hall.

With the gradual improvement of choir level and social influence, the composition and training methods of humanities members have also changed greatly in recent years. Due to the enthusiastic registration, the foundation of the members has been obviously improved, and most of them can read music skillfully. Most of them have a fairly good musical instrument foundation, and some can even play a variety of musical instruments. By hiring vocal music instructors (such as vocal music consultant Ye Ziqiang), the choir tries its best to make up for the congenital deficiency of its members in voice. In the autumn of 2007, at the request of most league members, the humanities increased the daily rehearsal once a week, which greatly increased the possibility of rehearsing complex works. During these three years, the Humanities Philharmonic tried to rehearse many chorus works in different languages and styles. The choir also tried to change and interpret these works in the form of chorus, duet and chorus. Through the rehearsal of a large number of fresh and different styles of works, the members' understanding of chorus art has been greatly improved, and their expressive force on the stage has also been greatly improved.

At 20 10, world choir games will be held in China again. From the second half of 2009, the choir began to make systematic preparations for the 6th world choir games held in Shaoxing, striving to achieve good results in this competition.

Fourth, internal management.

Extensive social influence is of course the goal pursued by a community, and sound internal management is an important guarantee to achieve this goal. With the development of humanistic philharmonic, internal management tends to be standardized and institutionalized. Since its inception, the Humanities Philharmonic has served as the head of the choir and artistic director. Chorus leaders are usually responsible for internal discipline and venue logistics coordination during performances, while artistic directors are responsible for business matters such as rehearsals. The term of office of the head of the delegation is generally one year, and he can be re-elected under special circumstances. Since the second half of 2009, the choir has tried the group service system. Below the head of the delegation (group) is the sound length. The original voice minister only served as an upload post in the choir, but in actual training, it was gradually found that the voice minister was very important to the development of the choir. Therefore, the voice minister is gradually responsible for the rehearsal of audition, the basic pitch rhythm of voice and the coordination of interpersonal relationship within voice. With the gradual maturity of the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra, a number of outstanding members have joined the alliance, and the number of candidates who can serve as sound directors has gradually increased. Many enthusiastic students volunteered, and the minister of sound became the backbone of the choir unconsciously, which greatly improved the rehearsal efficiency.

Since the second half of 2004, due to the requirement of staff, a new position-music director has been born in the choir. The music director is responsible for the storage of music scores, the conversion from notation to staff, and the MIDI production of voices. The initial consideration for setting up this position is that individual members still have difficulty in reading music and need the help of rehearsal. However, with the improvement of the quality of choir members and the increase of accumulated works, the management of music affairs has gradually become simpler. Since 2006, the choir has set up the position of financial supervisor, which not only manages the daily expenses, but also is responsible for formulating the budget for going out for competitions and performances. The financial supervisor is usually a classmate of the School of Economics and Management (especially the accounting major), and the operation mode of personnel and finance is independent of the head of the delegation (the group affairs group). In every publicity of recruiting new students and public performance of the school, the choir has to make all kinds of posters, so poster making has become a more professional job. Although poster design is not limited to professional students, it generally tends to students majoring in urban design and industrial design. After the large-scale activities, students are usually responsible for writing letters to the main media of the school. Through the above internal management, the choir provides many members with opportunities to exercise their abilities, which not only improves their sense of ownership and enthusiasm for work, but also achieves the goal of improving efficiency and stabilizing the management of the choir through decentralization and responsibility.

Verb (abbreviation for verb) Support of fund consultant

The development of the Humanities Philharmonic Choir is supported by the Liu Daoyu Foundation. President Liu Daoyu has always hoped to use the funds of this foundation to encourage education, especially innovative education. The spontaneous and exploratory development concept of the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra fully conforms to the spirit of the Foundation. Since receiving the help email from the choir at the end of 2005, the teachers of the Foundation have been actively communicating with the choir and have repeatedly affirmed the development of the choir. In the first two years or so, the foundation adopted a one-time payment method for each large-scale competition performance. Since the second half of 2008, the Foundation has set up a special fund to support the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra, increasing the amount of support and accepting public supervision. With this fund, the activities of the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra have been greatly expanded, with performances in Hong Kong and competitions in Shaoxing, thus broadening the horizons of the members, making a large number of chorus lovers and improving the social visibility of the choir.

There are also several professors who have given great help to the Humanities Philharmonic in chorus music and western art and culture. Jiang Baian, a professor of art department, has been promoting and encouraging the Humanities Philharmonic through the performance platforms of public elective courses "Western Music Culture" and "Weekend Art Garden", and also held a performance evening to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Choir. Professor Zhao Lin from the School of Philosophy is Zhou Kai's mentor, and his research on western culture, especially religious culture, is also widely spread in the choir through his works and lectures. Through introduction, the choir conducted exchange visits in Hong Kong and Taiwan Province Province, which enabled the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra to get in touch with Professor Wen from Chung Chi College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Mr. Du Hei, artistic director of the Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra. Professor Wen is good at religious philosophy and music culture. In June 2007, he had an in-depth musical and cultural exchange with all members of Wuhan Humanities Philharmonic Choir. In 2009, during the performance in Hong Kong, the Humanities Orchestra also paid a return visit to Chung Chi College of the Chinese University. Mr Du Hei of Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra is the predecessor of Taiwan Province Chorus. He fully affirmed the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra. Besides arranging rehearsals and observation, he also presented many songs with the characteristics of Taiwan Province Province, which made the choir understand the chorus music and chorus community culture on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Sixth, other student choirs in the same period.

The members of the Humanities Philharmonic Choir come from all colleges in the school. Through the promotion of the members to the choirs of all colleges, the level of choirs of all colleges has been rapidly improved. The team that insists on annual training has expanded from biology and law before 2004 to schools of economics and management, mathematics, information management, foreign languages, chemistry and China soft science. Moreover, the rehearsed repertoire basically got rid of the category of singing and chorus, and a large number of chorus works entered the selection scope of the Golden Autumn Art Festival Competition, including many works of difficulty level in the international chorus competition. Choirs of various colleges also carried out mutual observation activities before and after the competition. On the one hand, these activities improve the relative level of choirs, on the other hand, they also strengthen the friendship and contact between choirs, and the situation that choirs in colleges and universities do not communicate with each other is gone forever. In 2007, the Humanities Philharmonic and some university choirs began to perform spring chorus performances. After 2008, the performance gradually evolved into a joint performance of the five academies, and later became a chorus art festival.

The vigorous development of various academies and regiments in turn promoted the progress of humanities. Through the interaction with the academy, some high-level members who were not admitted to the humanities interview were able to enter the humanities philharmonic, which enhanced the strength of the choir. Colleges and universities have given great help to Humanities Philharmonic in providing rehearsal space, logistics support and publicity. Choir members of various colleges have also become loyal audiences of previous performances of the Humanities Philharmonic. With the joining of the chorus of Hubei Chorus Association's School of Biology and School of Economics and Management, and the development of the chorus performance of the Fifth Academy, the chorus club of Wuhan University has begun to take shape and attracted the attention of chorus lovers in other neighboring universities.

Although the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra is a student association of Wuhan University, it does not exclude students from other schools from joining. Students from China Geo University and Hubei University have successively become members of the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra, and the arrival of these members has greatly promoted the exchange between humanities and the choirs of these two universities. In addition, the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra has established contacts with non-Wuhan university choirs, such as the Student Choir of the Chinese University of Science and Technology and the Beiyang Choir of Tianjin University. Beiyang Chorus has also given great help to the Humanities Philharmonic Orchestra in terms of competition information and music score convenience. All these have laid a good foundation for the humanistic philharmonic to expand its development vision to the whole country.

Conclusion: the future direction

If the choir before 2004 is more like a pupil, reflecting more students' beautiful yearning for campus life, then the choir after 2004 is more like a young scholar with persistent pursuit, and more artistic and humanistic temperament is reflected in her. Since the 10th anniversary of the Communist Youth League, although the level of humanistic philharmonic has made great progress, it is still far from the ideal state. Therefore, only by recognizing their own position, challenges and possible opportunities can we correctly find the way for the rapid development of associations.

Judging from the existing or potential problems, first of all, the choir has only been in contact with the chorus in the strict sense for a few years, so it is difficult to really understand the true connotation of chorus art. Secondly, due to the lack of domestic resources, the choir has limited choice of tracks and its understanding of tracks is not very deep, which leads to unsatisfactory performance results. From the perspective of art promotion, the audience of the choir is mostly college philharmonic people, and those who don't know much about art are rejected. Therefore, how to improve one's artistic level and popularize chorus art is really a difficult problem. Chorus art, although it is a "minority art", is not impossible to promote. As a choir organization in colleges and universities, it is an arduous task for humanities and all chorus lovers to make use of the platform of colleges and universities and the relationship with other choirs to popularize this art to the greatest extent.

Vision for the future: corporatization should be the direction of organizing humanities symphony orchestra. Only in this way can we get rid of utilitarianism as much as possible and arouse the enthusiasm of all members. Adhere to the combination of elegant music and higher education, and more actively popularize chorus art in university campuses, which should receive better results. With the development of economy and the improvement of personnel quality, the concept of cultivating talents with balanced development of morality, intelligence, physique, beauty and labor will be more widely recognized, and humanistic philharmonic should be able to enhance its value as much as possible with this trend.
