The school is located in Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and is the only ministerial-level university in China. The school, formerly known as Northwest Second University for Nationalities, was founded in 1984 and renamed North University for Nationalities in 2008. The school is a bachelor's, master's and doctor's degree awarding unit approved by the State Council Academic Degree Office.
