With the development of China's higher education and the deepening of power system reform, North China Electric Power University, which was organized and managed by the former State Power Company, was officially placed under the management of the Ministry of Education in March 2003. State Grid Corporation of China, China Southern Power Grid Corporation and five power generation companies set up a school board and a college of science and technology with the Ministry of Education.

The school adheres to the development path of connotation development and always regards the quality of personnel training as the foundation of the school. The research results of energy and power-related disciplines focusing on national key disciplines-"Power System and Automation" and "Thermal Engineering" are at the leading level in China, and the research results in some fields have reached the international advanced or leading level, forming a distinctive feature of combining theoretical research with technical research, application development and industrial development. The cumulative output value of technology-intensive products formed by the transformation of scientific and technological achievements is nearly 2 billion yuan. Establish the first renewable energy institute in China, integrate the strength of various new energy disciplines, and gradually form and deepen a "big power" discipline characteristic school-running system based on dominant disciplines, focusing on emerging energy disciplines and supported by liberal arts disciplines. It has achieved fruitful results and laid a solid foundation for building a multi-disciplinary and research-oriented university. The school firmly establishes the student-oriented education concept, actively promotes the reform of students' comprehensive quality education and innovative talent training mode according to the diversified and multi-level needs of social and economic development, and adds new technology and new achievement courses in various majors. In the main major, the experimental and engineering practice teaching system with the framework of "four modules" (basic experimental teaching module, on-campus practice teaching module, simulation teaching module and off-campus engineering practice teaching module) is constructed, which strives to cultivate students' innovative spirit, effectively improve students' innovative practice ability and steadily improve the quality of personnel training.
