The school's predecessor was Jinan School, which was founded by the Qing government in Nanjing on 1906. Later, it moved to Shanghai, and 1927 was renamed as National Jinan University. During his stay in War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, he moved to Jianyang, Fujian. 1946 moved back to Shanghai,1949 merged with Fudan University, Jiaotong University and other universities in August. After the founding of New China, Jinan University was rebuilt in Guangzhou, 1958. Suspended during the Cultural Revolution, 1978 reopened in Guangzhou.
