Dalian Jiaotong University is the only institution of higher learning in Northeast China that features rail transit. 1956, the school was founded to meet the needs of the development of China's railway locomotive and rolling stock industry. At that time, it was Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Manufacturing School. 1958 was upgraded to Dalian Railway Institute, formerly managed by the Ministry of Railways. In February 2000, it was handed over to the Liaoning provincial government for management. In May 2004, it was renamed Dalian Jiaotong University.

The school has two campuses, Shahekou Campus and Lushunkou Campus, with a total area of 82 1 000 square meters and a total construction area of 54 1 000 square meters. The total collection of literature resources is 13 10500 volumes, e-books are151700 volumes, and there are 27427 kinds of Chinese and foreign electronic periodicals.
