Chongqing University is located in Chongqing, a big city with an important position and influence in the southwest of China. Chongqing, referred to as "Chongqing" for short, is the only municipality directly under the central government in People's Republic of China (PRC) and the central and western regions. Chongqing University was founded on 1929. Its predecessor was the merger of the former "Chongqing University", Chongqing Institute of Technology, Chongqing Medical College, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications and the former Military University.
