1May 4th, 998, is a festive day for Peking University, the highest institution of learning in China. While celebrating the 0/00th anniversary of the founding of the school, teachers and students also received various precious gifts from alumni from all over the world to their alma mater. One of the students presented a special gift to his alma mater in a special way: a newly discovered asteroid, which was approved by the International Astronomical Union Small Object Naming Committee. Peking University was discovered by Academician Chen Jiansheng, an alumnus of Peking University, and his team who observed cosmology at the Beijing Observatory. The international permanent number of the asteroid is 7072.

In the afternoon, a grand naming ceremony of the "Peking University" star and the unveiling ceremony of the memorial sculpture were held in the scenic Wuming Lake in Peking University. Leaders of the Ministry of Education and Chinese Academy of Sciences, President Chen Jiaer of Peking University, former President Wu Shuqing, Academician Wang Shouxian of Beijing Observatory, Academician Chen Jiansheng and Dr. Zhu Jin attended the meeting. The observational cosmology research group led by Chen Jiansheng X Institute officially launched the Schmidt CCD asteroid project in May 1995, which was called SCAP by the scientific community. Since the implementation of SCAP in May 1995, nearly 2,000 asteroids have been discovered, ranking first in the world. Peking University 7072 was discovered by Dr. Zhu Jin on1February 3, 1996, and it is also the first asteroid to obtain permanent numbering and naming rights since the implementation of SCAP.
