The history of Yangtze University can be traced back to the establishment of Beijing Institute of Petroleum Technology in 1950. In 1978, it was renamed Jianghan Petroleum Institute, and began to hold general undergraduate education, which was affiliated to China Oil and Gas Corporation. In April 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the former Jianghan Petroleum College, Hubei Agricultural College, Jingzhou Normal College and Hubei Medical College of Health Workers merged to form Yangtze University.
