The National University of Malaysia was founded in 1970. 20 12 changed its name to National University of Malaysia, and later changed its current name. This is the third public university founded by the Malaysian government. It is a recognized four-year research university with high educational level and strong scientific research strength. The National University of Malaysia has established some scientific research institutions in order to make breakthroughs in new research fields.

The National University of Malaysia has two campuses. The main campus is located in Bandar Balubangi, a medium-sized city in Selangor, about 35 kilometers away from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of the country, covering an area of 1 1,000 hectares. Another campus is located in Kuala Lumpur, covering an area of about 20 hectares. At present, the National University of Malaysia has more than 28,000 students, including nearly 20,000 undergraduates. This university is one of the three research universities mainly supported and funded by the Malaysian government (the other two are Malaya University and Malaysia Polytechnic University). There are more than 8,500 graduate students and doctoral students, accounting for about 29% of the total number of students. Although mother tongue is the main language, the National University of Malaysia has put forward strategies to encourage students to improve their English and other major foreign languages, including French, German, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Thai.
