Judging from the number of full-time academicians, Tsinghua University and Peking University rank in the top two, with more than 50 full-time academicians. The number of full-time academicians in five schools in East China follows that in North China, with more than 20 full-time academicians.

Its predecessor was Harbin Sino-Russian Industrial School founded by 1920, and 1928 was renamed Harbin Institute of Technology.

In the wave of university merger in 2000, the former Harbin Institute of Technology and Harbin Jianzhu University merged to form a new Harbin Institute of Technology. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, 36 disciplines of Harbin Institute of Technology entered the list, among which three disciplines, mechanical engineering, control science and engineering, and environmental science and engineering, got A+ scores.
