The school started in Jiangxi Public Medical College founded by 192 1 and National Chung Cheng University founded by 1940. 1993, Jiangxi University and Jiangxi University of Science and Technology merged to form Nanchang University. 1997, the school was listed as the national "2 1 1 project" key construction university. In 2004, the Ministry of Education signed an agreement with the Jiangxi Provincial People's Government to establish Nanchang University. In 2005, Nanchang University merged with Jiangxi Medical College to form the new Nanchang University.

The school is located in Nanchang, Jiangxi, a famous historical and cultural city in the south of the Yangtze River and a dynamic capital of the world. There are five campuses: Qianhu, Qingshan Lake, Donghu Lake, Poyang Lake and Fuzhou, covering an area of 8,098 mu (about 5.399 million square meters), with a school building area of 2 1.3 million square meters. It has formed a public service system with smooth information, advanced facilities, resource sharing, network TV, all-in-one card, security and broadcasting. It is the main node of China Education and Research Computer Network (CERNET) of the Ministry of Education in Jiangxi.
