The school's predecessor was Taigu Geological School, which was founded in 1956. 1958 moved to Taiyuan and changed its name to Taiyuan Institute of Geology (undergraduate); 1959 moved to Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province, and was renamed Fuzhou Institute of Geology; 1978 was named Fuzhou Institute of Geology; 1982 was renamed East China Institute of Geology; In 2002, it was renamed Donghua Institute of Technology.
The school has two campuses, Nanchang and Fuzhou, with a total campus area of more than 2,500 mu. There are more than 20 teaching units and 72 undergraduate majors; Post-Doctoral Research Center 1 unit, postdoctoral research mobile station 1 unit, academician workstation 1 unit, first-class discipline authorized by doctoral degree 1 unit, first-class discipline authorized by master degree 19, and master degree authorized category 12.
