Specifically his design concept, let's listen to what he says! The existing cafeteria is the only public place used by school students and all staff. Therefore, the primary consideration of our design is how to provide an open public place for all as a specialized library institution.
Our first idea is to design a completely open gallery on the first floor. People across campus can use it as a frequent channel even if they have no intention of going to the library. In order to let people flow and people's sight freely through the building, we began to conceive some randomly arranged arch structures to connect the gentle slope ground and the front garden with the building.
This unique arch structure is made of steel plates wrapped in concrete. On the plane, these arches are arranged along many curves passing through several points. With these intersections, we can keep the arch bottom thin and bear the live load of the upper floor. The arch spans from 1.8m to 16m, but the width remains 200mm. At the bottom of the gentle slope, there is a movie browser similar to a bar and a big glass table for the latest periodicals. These facilities can attract students to spend time in the library and other buses. Go up the stairs to the second floor. There are those big art books on the short bookshelf opposite the space under the arch. Reading tables of different sizes are arranged between these bookshelves. A new copier and a big desk allow users to edit professionally.
The library of Tama University of the Arts gives people the impression that it is from a cloister full of natural light to a visually impassable tunnel. When people pass through arched spaces with different spans and heights, the space they experience is diverse and changing quietly.
The library of Tama Art University is a place where everyone can find their favorite books and media and interact with them, just like walking through a forest or stepping into a cave. The library is also a center where new ideas and concepts begin to spread on campus.
