Out of admiration for the personalities and knowledge of professors such as Mei Yiqi, Wang Guowei and Huang Wanli, I have been longing for Tsinghua University in my heart. After retiring from Southeast University, I applied to teach Tang and Song poetry and college Chinese here, and it has been the fifth year in a blink of an eye. The awe of Tsinghua lecture hall, the shock and shame of Tsinghua students, the more and more profound experience of Tsinghua's spirit of "striving for self-improvement and respecting morality", and the love of Tsinghua campus like Southeast University have engraved the trajectory of my life. Let's focus on college Chinese.
Everyone seems to think that the Chinese level of college students is getting worse and worse. I also held this view before I came to Tsinghua. But the students in Tsinghua shocked me. They are the best undergraduates in Chinese I have ever seen. I once talked about the authenticity of Yue Fei and Man Jianghong in class. In the second class, a classmate named Guo suggested that "Henan dialect has no rhyme". Yue Fei, a native of Henan, is full of Jiang Hong and rhymes, so as to doubt Yue Fei's Jiang Hong. Although I don't agree with this student named Guo, his spirit of daring to ask questions deserves our recognition. Once when I was talking about Poetry Metrics and Creation, a student wrote An Interview with Jiang Lutan's Former Residence, clearly stating that Jiang Lutan's name, shop name, life and vocabulary of time works are all the same. To tell the truth, graduate students of ancient literature in Chinese department may not be able to do it. In the final exam of college Chinese, I wrote an essay entitled: Read Fang Xiaoru's Thought of Ming Dynasty, and write an argumentative essay with the topic of "Worrying Articles" in combination with the current reality, with no less than 800 words. The whole exam lasted more than two hours, and there were many other questions and appreciation questions. The composition can only account for a small part, 36 points. As a result, a girl named Hu Xinyu wrote a classical Chinese article of more than 2,000 words. The whole article has not been altered, and it is closely related to the topic. This article is very good. I am very emotional and ashamed.
Tsinghua students choose my class, not just focusing on exams. They also attach great importance to non-test content. They will take notes from former classmates, download, print and bind all my teaching courseware for the whole semester in advance, so as to preview before class, and then take notes on it to accumulate the contents of my teaching over the years. At the end of the term, some students gave me such notes, which I think is the best reward for the teacher. So some people say that students nowadays don't like learning Chinese. I don't think so, at least not the students in Tsinghua.
Students' learning attitude will in turn improve teachers' teaching level. As a teacher in Tsinghua, I am in awe of the lecture hall. I know that the podium where I stood was once where Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, Chen Yinque and Zhao Yuanren stood. As far as college Chinese is concerned, according to records, the teachers who have taught Chinese in Tsinghua are: 1929- 1930, Yang Shuda, Zhang Xu, Liu Wendian and Zhu Ziqing; 1932 is Wen Yiduo; 1934-1935 are Yu Pingbo, Pujiang Qing and Xu Weiqi; 1936-1937 are Yu Guanying and Li Jiayan; 1940 are Shen Congwen, Wu Xiaoling and He Shanzhou respectively; 1944 Yao Yao; Fan Ning, Zhu and Wang Binyang in 1946; 1947 is Guo; 1949 is Wu Zuxiang. Who among these people has no higher academic achievement than me? These masters are equal to Tsinghua's position in the whole country. How can I inherit their mantle? There is a big gap between me and the above-mentioned famous teachers in academic level, but I can learn from their teaching professionalism. For this reason, I invented a "looking back" lesson preparation method. I prepare lessons carefully before each class. Even if this text was just said in college Chinese class last week, my courseware will be revised and supplemented next week. In many cases, the PPT of a class will be as many as 300 pages. Of course, it is not necessary to use it in class. What I follow is that the college Chinese course I teach is the earliest excellent course in China. It has been done countless times, from teaching materials to teaching websites to classroom videos. You can say that you know it by heart. However, every time I prepare a lesson, I regard it as a new lesson. Every time I prepare a lesson, I will watch the previous speech or video again, so as to achieve a goal, ensure that the content repeated today is not lower than my original level, and stand on my past shoulders. Look back at the videos and recordings of your past classes to ensure that you are constantly surpassing yourself.
I also set myself the goal of "four realms of teaching". The first is the realm of scientific cognition, the second is the realm of humanistic preaching, the third is the realm of research and teaching, and the fourth is the realm of artistic fascination. This is also the realm of college Chinese teaching. I am willing to work together with all my colleagues in the field of college Chinese to create a new realm of college Chinese.
