Cardiff University is a comprehensive research university, located in Cardiff, Wales, England. It is a member of GW4 Alliance, Russell University Group and International Applied Science and Technology Development Cooperation Network.
The school was formerly the University College of South Wales and Monmouth County, founded in 1883. It was granted a royal charter in 1884 and became one of the founding members of the University of Wales in 1893.
1972 was renamed Cardiff University College, 1988 merged with the University of Wales College of Science and Technology, and merged with the University of Wales Medical College in 2004. In 2005, it was officially named Cardiff University, and began to award degrees by itself.
