The flagship campus of the University of Washington (UW, or simply "Washington" and "UDub") is located in Seattle, the capital of Washington State in the western United States. Founded in 186 1, it is one of the oldest universities on the west coast of the United States and one of the earliest schools to open medical schools in the world.

Washington University, known as the "public Ivy League", is a member of the "Twelve Schools in the Pacific", a sports league between association of american universities and the West Coast universities in the United States. The University of Washington has three campuses, located in Seattle, Tacoma and Balsal.

Tacoma Campus and Balsal Campus only offer undergraduate and master's courses. These three campuses belong to the same school. Unlike the general public university system, the Tacoma Campus and Balsal Campus of Washington University are not independent universities.
