The predecessor of NTU Institute of Technology is the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, founded by the famous material physicist Min Naiben in 1993. In 2009, Academician Zhu Shining served as the team leader, drawing lessons from the engineering school model of world-class universities, and preparing to build Nantah Institute of Technology. At the same time, Professor Nie Shuming, an outstanding professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Emory University, was hired as the dean. The aim of the college is to aim at the forefront of modern engineering, face the huge demand of human beings and the country for materials, information, health and energy, carry out high-level scientific and technological research by building an internationally competitive faculty, meet the demand for high-level talents in modern engineering and applied science, and cultivate leading talents.

The college has four departments, namely, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Department of Quantum Electronics and Optical Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Energy Science and Engineering, and offers five undergraduate majors, namely, Material Physics, Material Chemistry, Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering, New Energy Science and Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. Academic research platforms such as Jiangsu minimally invasive interventional medical materials engineering technology research center, Nanjing University Nantong Materials Engineering Technology Research Institute, Aerosol Biological Effect and Health Research Center, Material Preparation and Characterization Center, Laser Technology and Engineering Research Center, photovoltaic engineering Technology Center, Energy Storage Materials and Technology Center and Technology Industrialization Research Center have been built. It is also the main participating unit of "Collaborative Innovation Center of Artificial Microstructure Science and Technology" and Nanjing Microstructure National Laboratory.

Nantah Institute of Technology, as an international school-running pilot unit, enjoys autonomy in talent policy and discipline construction, and has built a collaborative management team combining "international expert team and local executive team", forming a school-running concept consistent with top international universities. On 20 15, the college officially declared "Internationalization Model College of Universities" to the Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs.

The college has a national second-class key discipline of material physics and chemistry and a first-class key discipline of material science and engineering in Jiangsu Province. It has one "Innovation Team of National Natural Science Foundation" and two "Innovation Teams of Ministry of Education"; It has two national first-class disciplines: materials science and engineering and optical engineering. Has the right to award two master's degrees in material engineering and optical engineering; There are five undergraduate majors: material physics, material chemistry, new energy science and engineering, photoelectric information science and engineering, and biomedical engineering, forming a complete talent training system from undergraduate to postdoctoral. The college sends nearly 200 graduates with good foundation and strong innovation ability to the country and Jiangsu every year, including undergraduate graduates 120 and doctoral and master students 70, and the employment rate of graduates is close to 100%.
