In April 2003, it was renamed Yunnan University for Nationalities, and it has been 70 years since then.

It is jointly built by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, Hubei Province and Wuhan City, and is located in the hometown of Baiyun Yellow Crane-the shore of South Lake in Wuhan. Founded in 195 1, the school is one of the earliest universities for nationalities after the founding of New China.
