Tongji University Architecture Department has four majors: architecture, five-year program; Historic building protection project, four years; Urban and rural planning, five years; Landscape architecture, four years. Engineering experimental class refers to a class specially set up by engineering colleges for its outstanding students (selected through examinations after entering school). It's different from the architecture department.

The Department of Architecture of Tongji University originated from the Department of Civil Engineering of Tongji University, the Department of Architecture of St. John's University, the Department of Architecture of Zhijiang University and the Department of Architecture of Hangzhou Art College. It was formed by the merger of these departments during the adjustment of national colleges and universities in 1952. Since 1986, it has developed into a college of architecture and urban planning, which consists of four departments (colleges): architecture department, urban planning department, landscape department and design and creativity college.

As an ancient civilization with rich historical and architectural heritage resources, it is necessary for China to be in line with the international advanced in this field to meet the growing demand for such professionals. Therefore, with the approval of the Ministry of Education in 2003, Tongji University established the first undergraduate major of "Historical Building Protection Project" in China Department of Architecture.

Most of the teachers in architecture department come from famous architecture departments at home and abroad, and there are 125 teachers, including 80 professors and associate professors, 67 doctors' degree teachers,/kloc-0 teachers in national universities and 2 teachers in Shanghai universities.
