University of Bologna. The University of Bologna was founded in the period of 1088- Holy Roman Empire. It is recognized as the first university in the world with a complete university system and has developed to this day, and is known as the "mother of world universities". 1988 September 18, on the occasion of the 900th anniversary of the founding of the University of Bologna, the presidents of 430 European universities signed the Charter of European Universities in Bologna Plaza, officially declaring Bologna University as the "mother of universities".
