The school's predecessor was Southwest Jiaotong University founded by 195 1. 1960, Chongqing jiaotong university was founded, and the departments of civil engineering of Chengdu institute of technology, metallurgy of Sichuan metallurgical institute and hydraulic engineering of Wuhan waterway college merged one after another. In 2000, the school was transferred from the Ministry of Communications to Chongqing for management, and a university was built for the province. In 2006, it was renamed Chongqing Jiaotong University, and a new doctoral degree awarding unit was added.
