Shanxi University, located in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, is a comprehensive research university jointly established by the Shanxi Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education. It has been selected into the national "Basic Capacity Building Project of Colleges and Universities in the Midwest" and the national "Comprehensive Strength Improvement Project of Colleges and Universities in the Midwest", and is one of the national key construction universities of "one province, one school" in the Midwest.

The school's predecessor was Shanxi University Hall, which was founded in 1902 (the 28th year of Guangxu reign). Its long history can be traced back to Lisan Academy in Ming Dynasty, Jinyang Academy and Lingde Academy in Qing Dynasty. In the first year of the Republic of China (19 12), it was renamed Shanxi University. ?
