What is the significance of Liu's study of Nankai classical Chinese novels?
In the discipline of Nankai Chinese Department, the study of ancient literature (including ancient literary criticism) has always been a leading force in China. Among them, the history of literary criticism and the study of ancient novels and operas are the research strengths with a long tradition, remarkable achievements and recognized by academic circles. However, the research of each research point is not balanced. As far as the study of ancient novels is concerned, the advantages of Nankai University before the Cultural Revolution were mainly in the study of vernacular novels, among which Mr. Xu Zhengyang's plays and novels were the best. However, Nankai University's specialized research on classical Chinese novels is basically blank. 1979, with the efforts of Mr. Hua Cuishen, Mr. Zhu, Mr. Ning and Mr. Lu Decai, the Chinese Department set up a novel and drama research room and recruited the first batch of graduate students after the Cultural Revolution. In order to expand the strength of the laboratory and attract external talents to serve the construction of Nankai University, Nankai Chinese Department issued an appeal to the society and alumni to recruit talents. After hearing the news, Mr. Wang quickly recommended Liu to Nankai Chinese Department. According to Mr. Ning's memory, at that time, Nankai Chinese Department invited Liu Ye's department to give lectures first; Subsequently, Liu was formally invited by the Chinese Department of Nankai University to hire Wei Liu as an adjunct professor, which Liu Xinran accepted. So Liu became the first batch of part-time professors hired by Nankai Chinese Department after the Cultural Revolution. As several graduate tutors registered for 1979 have been confirmed, Liu only assisted several tutors in giving lectures. Among them, Li Jianguo chose the research direction of mystery novels before the Tang Dynasty, and was warmly encouraged and carefully guided by Liu. Since then, Nankai University's research on classical Chinese novels and personnel training have started. From 65438 to 0982, Liu began to recruit graduate students in the direction of note novels for the first time in Nankai University by means of joint training with Mr. Ning. This is the first and only time in the history of education in China to recruit graduate students in this field. Liu is one of the few scholars who engaged in the study of classical Chinese note novel system at home and abroad earlier. Before the Cultural Revolution, he published novels of Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, essays on classical novels and other monographs devoted to China's classical note novels. After the new period, he published Notes of Past Dynasties and Notes of Classical Novels. These works were of pioneering significance at that time.

Liu also actively advocated that the first symposium on China ancient novels was held in Tianjin on 1984, sponsored by Nankai University. There are more than 30 experts and scholars engaged in the study of classical Chinese novels all over the country, but in fact there are not many scholars specializing in the study of classical Chinese novels. On the other hand, Nankai University was chaired by Liu, and Li Jianguo's research on mystery novels attracted the attention of academic circles, so it was fully valued and highly praised by scholars attending the meeting. At the meeting, many scholars thought that the study of classical Chinese novels in Nankai had formed a climate and scale, which should be developed and expanded. Some scholars also actively suggested the establishment of a classical Chinese novel research society with Nankai as the core. Through this conference, Nankai University's leading position in the research field of classical Chinese novels in China was basically established. It is precisely because of Liu's selfless dedication and enthusiastic efforts to the discipline construction of classical Chinese novel research in Nankai University that Nankai University's advantages in this discipline can be maintained.

The seeds of the study of classical Chinese novels sown by Liu have blossomed and borne fruit in Nankai. In recent years, Nankai University has made fruitful achievements in the study of classical Chinese, which has been fully affirmed and highly praised by academic circles. It should be said that these achievements have condensed Liu's hard work and sweat. Liu also made great contributions to the establishment of editing major in Nankai University. 1984, the State Education Commission decided for the first time to set up editing majors in Nankai University, Tsinghua University and Fudan University. The editing major of Nankai University decided to be located in the Chinese Department. The establishment of editing major is very beneficial to the development of Nankai Chinese Department. At that time, an important strategy set by Nankai Chinese Department was to fully mobilize the positive role of several respected part-time professors in Nankai Chinese Department. Among them are Mr. Bao from Sanlian Bookstore and Mr. Zhonghua Bookstore. Liu is one of the founders of editing major in Chinese Department of Nankai University. Liu himself is an old editor. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, he was the editor-in-chief of the supplement in Tianjin. After 1958, he went to the Commercial Press to be an editor until his death. He has been an editor for half his life. His achievements in dictionary compilation are well-known in the circle. He not only wrote professional works such as China Ancient Dictionaries, Ten Lectures on Commonly Used Dictionaries and A Brief History of China Dictionaries, but also devoted himself to the 30-year revision of Ci Yuan, and won one of the three chief editors. It can be said that he is a typical scholar editor.

Liu has worked in the editing and publishing industry for many years, and he is modest and kind, so he has met many celebrities in the editing industry.

Under Liu's recommendation, Nankai Chinese Department contacted many important figures in the editing and publishing circles. Many lectures of the first batch of editing students in Nankai University were given through Liu. Such as Mr. Cheng Yizhong from Zhonghua Book Company and Mr. Jiang Wancheng from Commercial Press.

Because Liu is an expert in editing, he can hit the nail on the head about what courses should be offered, what book knowledge and what practical knowledge are needed for editing majors. At that time, the curriculum and practical arrangement of editing major in Nankai Chinese Department were carefully guided and examined by Liu. Not only that, Liu also took the initiative to undertake the course of "Editorial Chinese Cultivation" for the editing major of Nankai Chinese Department. To this end, he also wrote a book "Editors' Chinese Cultivation" as a special teaching material for this course. Until 1987, he traveled between Beijing and Tianjin every week to teach this course for the editing major of Nankai Chinese Department.

After more than ten years' efforts, the editing major of Nankai Chinese Department has grown to a considerable scale and accumulated a lot of experience in running a school. The social response of previous graduates is also very good.
