The ranking of public universities in Hunan Province is as follows:

1, Central South University. Central South University was formed in April 2000 by the merger of Hunan Medical University, Changsha Railway Institute and Central South University of Technology.

The former Central South University of Technology was formerly known as Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, founded in 1952, and the former Changsha Railway Institute was formerly known as Central South Institute of Architecture and Engineering, founded in 1953. The main disciplines of the two universities can be traced back to Hunan Higher Industrial School, which was founded in 1903. Hunan Medical University, formerly known as Xiangya Medical College, was founded in 19 14 and is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in western medicine in China.

2. Hunan University. Hunan University, which originated from Yuelu Academy, was founded in 976 AD, and was transformed into Hunan College in 1903. 1926 was named the provincial Hunan university, and 1937 became the 15 national university of the national government. In 1950, Mao Zedong wrote down the name of the school. 1953 was renamed as central south institute of architecture and engineering in the adjustment of national departments, and 1959 restored the name of Hunan university. In 2000, it merged with Hunan University of Finance and Economics to form a new Hunan University.

3. National University of Defense Technology. The National University of Defense Technology of PLA (hereinafter referred to as the National University of Defense Technology) is located in Changsha City, Hunan Province. It is a comprehensive military university directly led by the Central Military Commission of the Chinese Production Party, and has always been a key institution for national and military construction.

It is one of the national key construction projects in the First Five-Year Plan 156, one of the 20 national key universities identified by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China 1959, the first batch of universities in the State Council approved to award master's and doctor's degrees, the first batch of pilot institutions of graduate schools in China, and the first batch of institutions that entered the national "21Project" construction plan.
