The history of the discipline of environmental science and engineering in Shanghai Jiaotong University can be traced back to the municipal engineering specialty established in 1928, which has trained a number of outstanding alumni such as Gu, Gu Xiasheng, Hu Jiajun and Xu. The College of Environmental Science and Engineering was established in September 1999, and received the doctorate and professional degree in environmental engineering in 200 1 and 2002. In 2003, he was awarded the first-class doctoral degree in environmental science and engineering. Relying on the discipline foundation of Shanghai Jiaotong University in engineering, management and medicine, after 20 years of rapid development, it has formed a unique advantage in the domestic environmental discipline and become an international environmental science and engineering field.

In order to meet the needs of the rapid development of environmental science and environmental protection in China, with the strong support of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Shanghai and other relevant ministries, local and brother colleges, the college has made important progress in teaching staff, personnel training, discipline construction, scientific research, international cooperation and social services. At present, special research directions have been formed, such as river basin water pollution control and remediation, atmospheric science and regional pollution control, solid waste treatment and recycling, soil and groundwater pollution remediation, environmental functional materials, resources and environmental management and response to climate change, environment and sustainable energy, eco-toxicology and environmental health. Established an excellent teaching team, trained a large number of environmental protection scientific research and engineering technicians, and achieved a series of influential scientific and technological achievements. Many opinions and suggestions have been adopted by the government.
