Northeast Li Dian University is located in Jilin City, Jilin Province, and is a key university in Jilin Province. It was selected as the first batch of key universities in the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan" and "Basic Capacity Building Project of Central and Western Universities" of the Ministry of Education. The school is one of the first construction units of the National Engineering Practice Education Center, the scholarship receiving institution of China government for overseas students in China, and the national continuing education base for professional and technical personnel.

Founded in 1949, the school is the first electric power engineering school established in New China. 1958 was named Jilin electric power institute, and 1978 was renamed northeast china institute of electric power. Since 2000, the management mode of "joint construction by the central and local governments, with local management as the mainstay" has been implemented. In 2005, the school was renamed Northeast Li Dian University.
