Lanzhou University of Technology is a university jointly founded by Gansu Provincial People's Government, Ministry of Education and National Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. It has been selected into the national "Basic Capacity Building Project for Colleges and Universities in the Midwest", the "Excellent Engineer Program" of the Ministry of Education, "11program", the new engineering research and practice project, and the national innovative experiment program for college students. It is a national school with national defense education characteristics.

Metallurgical engineering, power engineering and engineering thermophysics ranked 1 1 and 26 respectively in the third round of discipline evaluation. At present, there are 5 post-doctoral research stations, 5 doctoral programs in first-level disciplines, 25 doctoral programs in two disciplines, 8 master programs in first-level disciplines 18, 92 master programs in two disciplines and 5 master degree categories.
