Located in Wuhan, Wuhan University of Technology is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC), a national "double-class" construction university, and a "2 1 1 project" and "985 engineering advantage discipline innovation platform" jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Transport.

The school originated from 1898. Governor Zhang Zhidong of Huguang invited the Qing government to establish Hubei Technical School. On May 27th, 2000, it was formed by the merger of Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan Jiaotong University and Wuhan Automobile Institute.

Wuhan University of Technology originated from 1948 China People's Liberation Army Northeast Military Region Ministry of Industry Professional School. 1978 was identified as a national key institution, 1985 was renamed Wuhan university of technology, and 1998 was transferred from the former state building materials bureau to the Ministry of education as the director.
