NTU's motto is "Honesty and greatness, study hard and walk hard". The motto of NTU embodies the fine traditions and characteristics of Nanjing University, and also embodies the ideal pursuit and realization of running a school. The eight-character school motto is independent, focused, interrelated and integrated, covering many aspects such as educational thought, scientific spirit and character cultivation.

First, the spirit of school motto

The eight-character school motto of "Honesty, Simplicity, Macroness, Learning and Perseverance" is not only concise, catchy and easy to spread, but also dignified, profound and philosophical. The word "encouraging learning" often appears in ancient Chinese. Song Zhenzong wrote a poem called "Encouraging Learning" to encourage people to study hard; "Dunxing" can be found in the Book of Rites Quli: "Those who have knowledge and give in are also gentlemen." ; The combination of "sincerity and grandeur" and "hard study" not only embodies the fine tradition and characteristics of Nanjing University, but also embodies the ideal pursuit and realization of running a school.
