Association of american universities (AAU) was founded in 1900. It is a professional association composed of high-level research universities in the United States and is recognized as a world-class university group. The aim of the association is to improve the academic research and education level of universities.
There are only 62 member universities in AAU, including 34 American public universities, 26 American private universities and 2 Canadian universities, accounting for only a few of the 3,638 comprehensive universities in the United States and hundreds of higher education institutions in Canada. However, AAU member universities award about half of the doctoral degrees, about 22% of the master's degrees and about 65,438+06% of the bachelor's degrees in the United States every year, and their research funding is 55% of the sum of all universities in the United States. The overall strength of AAU University is much higher than other universities. The number of academicians in AAU University is 2 1.68 times that of non-AAU University, the number of published papers is 5.47 times that of non-AAU University, the federal research funding is 3.46 times that of non-AAU University, and the number of patents granted is 2.94 times that of non-AAU University.
Member characteristics
In the United States, there are many criteria to judge whether a comprehensive university (not including liberal arts colleges) is a first-class university, including university ranking, school reputation, faculty lineup, academic reports, alumni quality, research funding, etc. But the most important factor is whether it is a member of AAU. Although this standard is not absolute, a small number of top universities have failed to join AAU for various reasons (such as University of Miami at Oxford, Notre Dame University, Lihai University, Brigham Young University, Rensselaer Institute of Technology, Wake Forest University, Dartmouth College, Boston College, University of California at Santa Cruz, etc.). ), in most cases, AAU can be equivalent to a first-class university. A prestigious school may not be first-class, but AAU members must be first-class universities.
AAU member schools are all world-class universities, including Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and other world-class universities, and there are some rising stars with a history of less than 50 years, and some even rose for only 20 years. Up-and-coming stars such as UC University in California 10, six of which are AAU member universities (among the other four, one is a new campus that has just started enrolling students, one is a specialized medical school, and two are also the top universities in the United States 100), including the University of California, San Diego (1960) and the University of California, Irvine (. In addition, Brandeis University (1948) and State University of New York at Stony Brook (1957) are both rising stars with a history of more than 50 years. Carnegie Mellon University was formed by the merger of Carnegie Institute of Technology and Mellon College. 1967. From the beginning of school to joining AAU, the average time of the above six schools is 3 1 year, and the shortest time is only 15 years. Not only that, schools with a long history, such as Harvard University and Princeton University, have created outstanding figures, scientific and technological achievements and cultural achievements as bright as the Milky Way, and their contributions to the country and even the whole mankind are immeasurable.
As a world-class university group, AAU presents the same characteristics of some first-class universities, such as suitable school scale, humanistic environment where masters gather, and high-quality research results. And not all indicators are as big as possible. AAU member universities also show distinctive personality characteristics, such as accumulating hundreds of years of history, creating the American spirit, giving birth to Harvard University in Silicon Valley Industrial Park, Stanford University leading the development of modern high technology, and California Institute of Technology with small scale and fine quality. These schools are either fully developed, such as Harvard University, Stanford University and the University of Michigan. Or they are good at something, such as Caltech, Columbia University, Purdue University and Pennsylvania State University. In short, they are the first phalanx of American higher education institutions.
system of selection
AAU has strict selection criteria and a set of strict evaluation procedures to ensure the graduate education and academic research level of the selected member universities. Through various visits, AAU's special committee understands the connotation and characteristics of universities, determines the development goals and directions of universities, and finally formally sends invitations to selected universities after discussion and approval by all members. In short, the combination of quantitative indicators and qualitative evaluation, respecting the personality characteristics of university development while demanding standards, is the biggest feature of AAU evaluation procedure. AAU's index system mainly focuses on academic research and the evaluation of students' education level, including: the number of competitive federal research grants, the number of academicians of American national research institutes, the quality of teachers and awards, and the academic level of research papers.
Colleges and universities applying to join AAU must obtain the consent of at least 3/4 existing members. At present, at least 46 of the 62 AAU members need to vote in favor to be accepted, which shows that the threshold is high. After Texas A&M University joined AAU in 200 1, it took nine years for Georgia Institute of Technology to join AAU, so the members of AAU were carefully selected. In addition, 1999, two universities with poor grades were expelled from AAU. After 20 10, AAU revised the membership threshold, so Boston University was allowed to join, but two more universities left the AAU alliance.
