Southwest University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education, which is jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and Chongqing Municipality. It is the first batch of "world-class discipline construction universities", the national "21project" and "985 engineering advantage discipline innovation platform", and the member universities of "double first-class" agricultural alliance.

The school can be traced back to East Sichuan Normal School as early as 1906, and 1936 was renamed Sichuan Institute of Education. In 2005, Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University merged to form Southwest University.
