The school was originally named East China University of Political Science and Law. 1In June, 952, the law departments, political departments and social departments of 9 universities including St. John's University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Soochow University, Xiamen University, Hujiang University, Anhui University, Shanghai College and Aurora University were merged and established in the former site of St. John's University. 1958, the school was merged into Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences; 1963 rebuilt, enrolled students the following year; 1966 to stop enrollment, 1972 to cancel enrollment; 1March, 979, with the approval of the State Council, the school resumed classes for the second time.
In 2000, the school was placed under the management of Shanghai by the Ministry of Justice.
