North University for Nationalities, directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, is a comprehensive ethnic college. The school is located in Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. It is the only ministerial university in China established in the minority autonomous region.

The school, formerly known as Northwest Second University for Nationalities, was founded in 1984 and renamed North University for Nationalities in 2008. The school is a bachelor's, master's and doctor's degree awarding unit approved by the State Council Academic Degree Office.
