The school was formerly the Gansu Technical School founded by 19 19. 1958, based on the establishment of Lanzhou Institute of Technology, merged Gansu Jiaotong University and named it Gansu University of Technology.
1965, the school was placed under the first Ministry of Machinery Industry. At the same time, the departments of hydraulic machinery, chemical machinery, oil and mineral machinery, welding technology and equipment of Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute and Beijing Institute of Machinery all moved in, and a group of teachers were transferred from Hunan University and Hefei University of Technology to work in the school. In 2003, it was officially renamed Lanzhou University of Technology.
As of April 2023, the school has two campuses, Langongping Campus and Pengjiaping Campus, covering an area of 2,430 mu, with a building area of 1.23 million square meters, 2.27 million books and 0/.24 million e-books.
