Good morning, everyone (applause)
I'm glad President Xu gave me a high honor to talk about my experience in Peking University (applause).
It is no exaggeration to say that Peking University has changed the place where I was born, upgraded my own place, and turned me from a rural child into a place of the world. Without Peking University, there would definitely be no me. Today, Peking University left me a series of good memories and probably a series of pains. I found myself between beauty and pain, frustration, struggle and progress. I can start a career for myself, my family and society.
I still remember that there are boys in our class who play the violin downstairs in the girls' dormitory every day. (Laughter) I want to attract girls' attention. I remember myself. I attract girls' attention and help girls with their bags every winter and summer vacation. (Laughter, applause) I found that all girls have boyfriends. (Laughter) I asked if I wanted a backpack and said to give my boyfriend a rest. (Laughter. (Applause.) I still remember that when I first entered Peking University, I would talk about what ordinary students introduced to each other at the first class meeting. I stood up and introduced myself. Our monitor stood up and said to me: Can Yu Can Hong Min speak Japanese? (Laughter) I spent a whole year holding a radio and imitating the radio station in the Woods of Peking University. Today, I can speak very well.
People can make progress all their lives. How many things are particularly touching when our life begins and ends at Peking University? Rather than saying that we were lucky enough to meet Professor Zhu Guangqian, our classmates took turns pushing wheelchairs to accompany us for a walk in Peking University every day. (Applause) Every time I push a wheelchair, my heart is filled with admiration for Professor Zhu Guangqian and an innate sense of sacredness. Because I wrote a book "History of Western Aesthetics", I entered the university to read the second book.
Second book? Because of the first sample, I entered Peking University and walked into the dormitory. Some of my classmates have read a book called The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich in the dormitory. I asked: I still have to read books in college. Take it away from my eyes and read it. I ignored it. I continued to study, keeping my eyes in my heart. I know that I only need to read a lot of books to qualify as a student of Peking University. (Applause) I read the first book, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, at Peking University and read it three times.
I still remember my tutor Professor Li Funing used to write a very complete and beautiful blackboard every time the English Department of Peking University gave us the fourth volume of New Concept English. I always write from the upper left corner of the blackboard and finish it in the lower right corner when the bell rings. I still remember my English literature teacher, Professor Luo, because I was in a good mood and passed the exam last year. I asked Professor Luo that I had passed the course and finished it. Professor Luo said, I gave a passing grade. Please remember that I must do it in the future. It is worthwhile for me to give tolerance, knowledge, courage and freedom to the teachers of Peking University, so that we can truly become students of Peking University and truly reap the spirit of Peking University. When I heard President Xu Zhihong sing "Invisible Wings" to the students, I was moved to tears when I opened the video, because I think that's what the president of Peking University should be like (applause).
I remember how depressed I was when I was at Peking University. My second English level was terrible. Although I passed the college entrance examination after three years' hard work, I was unexpectedly admitted to Peking University twice because I failed the exam. I never thought I could go to school anywhere in Peking University. My heart feels that I will never reach it. In the second year of the senior three exam, my college entrance examination score exceeded the admission score of Peking University by seven points. I finally made up my mind to grit my teeth and fill in the word Peking University. I knew there would be many people with higher scores than me. I thought I would be admitted. The enrollment teacher of Peking University has been very discerning for thirty years. Today (applause), my English level is actually very poor. In the countryside, I can not only listen, but also recite grammar and words. When our class was divided into three classes, fifty students were assigned to Class A because I made a mistake in English test scores. I was transferred to Class C, which is called the pronunciation and intonation hearing impairment class (laughter).
I also remember that I had never even seen a dream of red mansions before I entered Peking University. My classmates read this book, and I tried my best to catch up. I spent five years reading more than 800 books. (Applause) I remember that Wang Qiang, my monitor, was a bookworm and the president of the New Oriental Education Research Institute. I follow him every time I buy a book. At that time, Peking University gave us more than 20 yuan a month for living expenses. Wang Qiang has a habit of dividing the living expenses into two halves, half for books and half for food stamps. The money for books has never been used to buy books. I stole it from the loan office without a meal ticket. I find it a good habit. I also spend half of my living expenses on books and half on meal tickets. I stole the meal ticket after eating it. (Laughter and applause)
It is no exaggeration to say that the students in our class were really studying in many classes in Peking University, and our class was very active at that time. There are several famous poets named Xichuan, whose real names are Liu Jun. (Applause) I still remember that before our class started the atmosphere, the excellent group of Peking University had a good time in the evening and finally danced face to face. The following week, it was time to inform criticism, and the Ministry of Education danced regularly. Boys and girls must jump closer to realize that they have violated discipline. Now we are happier than before. Dance and walk hand in hand on campus. At that time, boys and girls walking hand in hand on campus would be thrown into the nameless lake. As usual, they take a walk on campus at 12 in the evening. (Laughter and applause)
I still remember that fifty students in our class happened to be twenty-five boys and twenty-five girls. I was very excited at that time. (Laughter) I think everyone should think about it. Girls have a crush on some handsome and charming boys, as well as girls like me who are full of feelings and have great potential for future development. (Laughter)
I remember I struggled for two years, hoping to catch up with my classmates. Just now, Teacher Lv Zhi said that although I can be the first in the college entrance examination, there are too many elite talents in Peking University, and the students with high IQ around me are also top students from all provinces or second in Peking University. It is a very difficult process to catch up with my classmates, although I have to study two hours more than other classmates every day. At the end of my sophomore year, my grades were very hard, and I was depressed according to the schedule. No girl came to love me and comfort me. (Laughter) This leads to my big problem. When I was in the third grade, I got a very serious disease called infectious infiltrative tuberculosis. At that time, I was dizzy because I was watching a dream of red mansions, just like I was watching the chapter in which Lin Daiyu died of vomiting blood due to tuberculosis. My life is over. The doctor of Peking University Hospital told me that I would stay in the hospital for several years. I lived in the hospital for several years, read many books and wrote more than 600 poems. From then on, I became attached to writing poetry. I have rich feelings and no beautiful office. I'm glad a poet came, because I found that all the people who really became poets had an accident. We wrote a poem with Haizi, a poet who was too famous at that time, and wrote a beautiful poem called "Spring Warms bloom Facing the Sea". Each of our students can probably recite it. I cried all day when I heard that I committed suicide lying on the tracks. From then on, I put down my pen and never wrote another poem (applause).
I remember when I graduated from Peking University in my senior year, my grades were among the best in my class. I had a good attitude at that time. I know I am smarter than my classmates, and I have the ability to continue to work hard. At the graduation ceremony of our class, I said that everyone got excellent grades and my classmates fell behind. I want to reassure my classmates that I will never give up what we have done in the past five years. I will do it for ten years, twenty years, twenty years and forty years. (Applause.) I said to them: I'll keep a good mood when I do it.
There is a story that there are only two kinds of animals that can reach the top of the pyramid. The eagle flew with its own talent and wings. How many eagles are our children? Many students need to work too hard to reach the top. Many students can easily graduate from Peking University and enter Harvard, Yale and Oxford. How many students in a famous university like Cambridge are full of talents to learn? This is better than saying that Wang Qiang, my monitor, has a good imitation ability. Listening to any sentence anywhere will definitely be an announcer in two Peking University radio stations for four years. I listen to that voice every day, and my heart is full of hatred. (Laughter) As we all know, there are animals like eagles. Snails at the top of the pyramid can only climb up, and it takes months for snails to climb from the bottom to the top. In two months or even two years, people did find traces of snails at the top of the pyramid. I believe that the snail will climb up smoothly, fall down, climb again, and climb again after falling down. What students need to know is that snails can only see the world like eagles if they climb to the top of the pyramid. Maybe our classmates have eagles and snails. When I was at Peking University, including today, I admitted that I was a snail. I may not have climbed directly to the top of the pyramid. As long as you climb high enough, leave yourself an energetic day. (Applause)
I often tell my classmates that we have left some days in our lives that make us cry. Life is whiter than us. Many of our classmates entered the end of Peking University with excellent results, and their lives began at the age of 18, and they listened to their teachers. Listen to our parents, and now we have really started our own independent life. We must create some touching days ourselves before we can touch others. Our children have rich families and poor families come to our starting point. We have to choose to be born in a rich family and a poor family. The poor family can say, dad, take it back for me. I want to stay in the house and choose the end of our lives. All our classmates used to have a good life. 18 years old, because of the pride of Peking University and the pride of the world, many children have already walked in front of us. It means that you have achieved from now on, which means that the road ahead is bright in 50, 60 or even 100 years. It's time for every student to think. Personally, I think that as long as we have two things in mind, we can become our own lives.
The first is called ideal. I have a feeling since I was a child that I want to cross the horizon and run to the distance. I call it the desire to cross the horizon. It is because of this strong desire that I have the courage to break the college entrance examination. When I have an example in my life, I am more famous than my neighbors. My lifelong role model name is Xu Xiake, a neighbor 500 years ago. It is true that my neighbor Jiangyin, Jiangsu, and I also got 97 points in geography because I admire Xu Xiake. (Applause) Xu Xiake also brought me the feeling of crossing the horizon. I am determined that Xu Xiake will travel all over the country. I want to travel all over the world, but now I am realizing my dream. As long as students have ideals and aspirations, they will eventually succeed. The process to be done must be hard work, the ability to endure setbacks and failures, and the ability to constantly expand your thinking and do things better.
The second thing is called conscience. We should do good deeds, be worthy of ourselves and others, have the attitude of sharing with others, and have the spirit of being willing to serve others. People with conscience will start from concrete life, and what they do will definitely have an impact on their future life. I'll tell you two short stories, and I'll end my speech which took a long time.
An entrepreneur told me this story when I was in college. There are classmates in our class whose families are relatively rich. Every week, they bring six apples to the dormitory. Although I gave the apple, I can leave an impression on my classmates. Children are so selfish. Entrepreneurs succeed in doing things, but students fail. I hope to join the entrepreneurial team. We can discuss that the reason for joining is simple, because the spirit of sharing has never been embodied in universities. For students, the first point of college must be the same. Students share what they have, feelings, ideas and wealth. Even the apples are divided into six parts. Let's eat. Because you know, if you do something, you will always pay the price for nothing.
I'll tell you my own story again. When I was studying in Peking University, I always had the spirit of serving my classmates. I got good grades. I like working since I was a child. I hope to attract the attention of teachers and classmates through hard work. I have been cleaning the classroom since the first grade of primary school. I have formed the good habit of cleaning the dormitory every day. After four years of cleaning, our dormitory has not been arranged for health duty. In addition, I carry a dormitory kettle to fetch water for my classmates every day as a kind of physical exercise. Everyone has seen my habit of fetching water. There is another situation. Sometimes I forget to fetch water. My classmate said I would fetch water after school. I don't think it's a good thing to draw water. Because everyone remembers that classmates help each other, they take it for granted. Ten years have passed. 1By the end of 995, New Oriental had a certain scale. I hope to find a partner and come from the United States and Canada to find some classmates. I used to be a role model when I was in college, including just now when Teacher Wang Qiang waited for me, and the bait came back, bringing a lot of dollars every day. Spending money generously to let students know that China can also make money, I think it will probably bring them back. When I came back, they gave me a very unexpected reason. They said: Yu, let's go back to the past. We played with water for four years. We said: We know what kind of spirit. All the food will definitely give us porridge to drink. Let's go back to China. * * * Let's work together in the New Oriental Bar to get today's New Oriental. (Applause)
Life struggles, life is great, life is trivial, we have great ideals and a kind heart, and we will be able to pile up many trivial days into a great life. If you don't have an ideal every day, you won't make progress, and the days after that will always be piled together. I hope all the students can pile up ordinary days into a great life. (Applause)
On behalf of all the old alumni, I express my heartfelt wishes to more than 3000 freshmen. On behalf of all the old alumni and New Oriental, I donated RMB 2 million to President Xu's classmates to help them study, move and grow. (Applause)
