Interview with Shu Tian: Ideal and Reality of Design

Who is your inspiration in the field of design?

When I asked Wu and Chen Xingnuo, graduate students of Tsinghua University Industrial Design Department, they were traditional and classic, modern and trendy; Europe, America, Asia and Hexing come together;

"I like American designer Raymond? Raymond Loeway "Qian Jun explained," He is an all-round designer who combines design concept with commercialization very well. I think we really need this type of designer during the period of rapid economic development in China. "

There are also many Nordic designers with architectural design as the background, and their styles and concepts are different from those of Americans. Marc newson has a different way of thinking. The products he designed are different from the traditional situational functions. I think this should have a lot to do with the values of this era. "

Kenya Hara, a Japanese designer, was specifically mentioned in Star Nuo: "I think the development path of Japanese society, both economically and culturally, is worth learning from. From the design point of view, in fact, many Japanese design concepts originated from China. Look at Kenya Hara's works. They are exquisite and unobtrusive. This is the characteristic of many oriental designers' works, which is very introverted. "

Wu (second from the left in the front row) won this year's "Made in brunell" international award.

Not long ago, I came to Britain with my mentor, Associate Professor Qiu Song, the chief designer of the Beijing Olympic torch and podium. Six Tsinghua students, including Wu and Chen Xingnuo, came to the UK to participate in the graduation exhibition "Made in Brunel Brunel" for design students of Brunel University.

How to design?

Qiu Song, who has taught in Tsinghua University for many years, obtained a master's degree in design management from Brunel University. He frankly realized the differences in industrial design teaching between Britain and China:

"Most of the design schools of China University take art design as the background, while Brunel University takes engineering as the background. Because of the different platforms for cultivating students, the adaptability of graduates after leaving school is also very different. "

Associate Professor Qiu Song said that when designing in China, a concept is usually put forward first, and then a model is made. In the next step, a lot of coordination is usually needed to decide the structure and engineering of the work. If the coordination is not good, there will be an insurmountable gap between the two majors. As a designer, it will be much more convenient to decide the structure after having a certain background knowledge in the engineering field.

"I learned from Brunel University that they closely linked engineering and design. Originally, this university was strong in these two professional fields, and after the merger, it was called School of Design and Engineering. Then graduates trained through such a platform usually have very practical skills. "

At this time, Chen Xingnuo added a design work he saw at the graduation exhibition. Next to his booth is a university in Mexico. The student's design presents a circuit board, which is truly displayed in front of the audience and makes people feel that it is an achievable product. "If you only explain the design, you can let your imagination run wild. But using mobility to realize this design, we feel very admired. And our academic background does not have such ability. "

ideal and reality

We hope to learn more from new designers and masters from other countries. For Qian Jun, who has been in the business for one year and returned to school, how to keep the relationship between ideal and reality is a problem that she constantly inspires herself:

"In China, industrial design is a just-started discipline, and its application in companies and factories is based on efficiency. It is characterized by high speed, but high requirements, and not very idealistic. When I was an undergraduate, I came into contact with the idea that industrial design should be a subject that makes life better.

I believe that every designer has idealistic ideas in his heart. Sometimes when I browse the design website, I feel envious when I see that the students in the design school can make a design very deep. I returned to the campus, both the process and the result are very meaningful to me; Not in the company, holding a salary and watching a product sell. This is a completely different concept. I hope that after returning to school, I can raise my values and abilities to a new height. "

For Associate Professor Qiu Song, who leads the team, how to organically link various disciplines and fields in Tsinghua University is the direction of his continuous efforts. "Tsinghua actually has such a platform. If we can cooperate with materials, engineering and even economy and management, our design will be fuller and the design field will be richer and broader. In the end, this will enable us to cultivate talents in the new era and be more suitable for the development of society. "
